Research that involves people carries a duty of care. The Institute reviews such research before it begins, to protect the dignity, safety, and privacy of everyone who takes part. Our review process is independent of the researchers whose work it assesses, and it is modelled on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) used by universities and research centres.
What needs review
Any study that collects data from human participants needs review before it starts. This includes surveys, interviews, focus groups, and the use of personal records. Studies that work only with public, non personal data do not normally need review, but the team will confirm this for you.
What the review looks for
- Informed consent. Participants understand what the study asks of them and agree freely, and may withdraw at any time.
- Privacy and data protection. Personal data is collected for a clear purpose, kept secure, and held no longer than needed.
- Fairness. No group is exposed to undue burden or risk, and benefits and burdens are shared justly.
- Integrity. The method is sound, the analysis is honest, and findings are reported in full.
How to request a review
Submit a short description of your study through the request form on this site and choose "Ethics review." The review committee reads every request and replies by email with its decision or its questions. Review is offered to the Institute's researchers and to its partners.
