About the Institute
The Canadian Institute for Middle East and Gulf Studies (CIMEGS) is an independent, not-for-profit research institute incorporated in Canada on February 13, 2024, under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, and based in Mississauga, Ontario. The Institute is dedicated to advancing knowledge of the Middle East, the Gulf, and North Africa: three regions whose economies, societies, and cultures are among the most dynamic in the world.
Our mandate
The Institute conducts, promotes, and disseminates research and studies on the economic, social, and cultural life of the Middle East and Gulf regions. It facilitates academic exchange, hosts conferences and seminars, and provides expert analysis and resources that foster a deeper understanding of these regions in Canada and globally. CIMEGS serves as a bridge for dialogue and knowledge sharing between Canadian and international scholars and the wider public.
What we do
- Publish. A peer-reviewed journal, academic books, and research reports produced with a network of scholars in Canada and across the regions we study.
- Convene. Conferences, forums, and seminars that bring researchers, students, and practitioners into one conversation.
- Teach. A training academy offering professional courses in research methods and applied skills, including statistical analysis, geographic information systems, artificial intelligence, and building information modelling.
- Support. Membership programs, writing platforms, and resources that help emerging researchers develop and share their work.
How we work
CIMEGS is organized as a hub of specialized portals: a journal, a publishing house, a research hub, a training academy, a conference space, and a writers platform. Each portal has its own editorial focus, while all of them follow the Institute's standards of rigour, independence, and accessibility. The Institute publishes in English, with selected work in other languages as its programs grow.
Incorporation
The Institute is incorporated under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, corporation number 1577455-1. It is carried on without the purpose of gain for its members, and any surplus is used in furtherance of its research and educational purposes. Directors serve without remuneration.
